Tradition continues this weekend on Saturday, June 14 at 10 a.m. when the Vineyard Committee on Hunger (VCOH) holds its annual bread sale at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven. The bake sale has been going on for 30 years, helping to raise money to feed the hungry and to raise awareness about the issue.

This bread/bake sale presents more than your usual loaf. Well-known bakers from across the Island are some of the contributors to the sale and they bring bread, muffins, cookies and other treats — many gluten-free. If you would like to bring something for the sale, come a little early. Organizers will be there by 9 a.m. to accept donations.

Proceeds from this sale go directly to support Island families in need. Last year’s sale raised approximately $650. Funds are utilized by the Island Food Pantry, Serving Hands Food Distribution, Family-to-Family Holiday Meals and Meals on Wheels. The bread sale is a way to raise awareness of a situation that may come as a surprise to many: hunger existing in a resort community. According to the VCOH website, one in 10 families struggle to survive the winter season on the Vineyard. They rely on the available food supplemental services to feed their families. Seniors rely on the services as well.

Everyone is invited to stop by to purchase bread, pastries, cookies and muffins. Monetary donations are always welcome, too.
