Moon and Ruby Red Mars

The gibbous moon will appear near the bright red planet Mars tomorrow night. A third celestial object is the bright star Spica, the principal star in the zodiacal constellation Virgo.

For those of us out looking at fireworks tonight, the first quarter moon will be fairly high in the southwestern sky.  The moon is in Virgo. It takes the moon more than three days to move through this giant zodiacal constellation. The moon is spending the weekend in Virgo.

The moon will continue to get brighter in the coming week. On Monday night, the moon appears near the bright planet Saturn, in the zodiacal constellation Libra.

On Tuesday night, the moon appears more southerly, in the zodiacal constellation Scorpius. It is not far from the bright reddish star Antares, the principal star in that constellation.

The coming week ends with the full moon in Sagittarius.
