On Monday and Tuesday of this past week the Chamber Music Society started their summer season in fine form. On Monday the Calder Quartet played the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. On Tuesday they took their violins up-Island to play the Chilmark Community Center. The title of their program was From the Halls of Carnegie and Disney. The evening included numbers from Mozart, Shubert and Janáˇcek

This Monday and Tuesday, July 21 and 28, the season continues with a concert simply called “Cool,” with Quartet San Francisco. Quartet members Gordon Goodwin and Vince Mendoza recently received Grammy nominations. The quartet has also won the New York city Tango Competition.

On Monday and Tuesday, as always at the Whaling Church and Chilmark Community Center, the performances will include arrangements from Patrick Williams, The Bay is Deep Blue, and Dave Brubeck’s immortal Take Five.

This is the 44th year of summer concerts brought to the Island by the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society. Artistic director Delores Stevens continues to play an integral part in the summer series both on and off the stage; she plays piano at most of the concerts.

Tickets are $35 ($30 with Our Island Club card) for adults; children and students are always free.
