A state-imposed shellfishing ban in Sengekontacket Pond has been extended following rainfall on Sunday, July 20.

The news was posted on the Oak Bluffs town website. According to the notice, the ban is scheduled to end Saturday, July 26, depending on weather conditions.

Saltwater pond closures to shellfishing following heavy rainfall events have become routine on the Vineyard during the summer months. The closures are a precaution due to concentrations of pollutants that can be washed into ponds from roads and other sources such as migratory waterfowl. Sengekontacket Pond is safe for swimming, boating and other recreational activities.
