August seems to be the season for giving among the children here on the Island. The younger set, evoking their entrepreneurial impulses, are opening lemonade stands and selling the results of their jewelry making to make donations to the animal shelter. The animals in our care will benefit from their largesse. This week we received gifts from Hannah and Maggie Best, whose donation was supplemented by their dad, and from Charlotte Freeman’s bracelet making. Many thanks to all.

It is a mystery. We are currently housing a Parson Russell terrier who was found by the animal control officer running loose in West Tisbury. So far, no one has inquired about him even though he was wearing a collar but no identifying tags. Who could have abandoned this little creature? He is brown and white and approximately six years old. The animal shelter has had him neutered. He will be ready to depart for a new home a week from now. As most people here know, the animal shelter is the best option for an owner who needs to give up a pet. A warm bed, food and medical care is available for all animals left in our care. Not to mention the loving attention of the staff and volunteers. A suitable home is soon found for them, a better option than leaving the tame animal to fend for itself.

There are two kittens remaining from the influx of babies the shelter has taken in during the last few weeks. We have Rupert, a gray male with white markings, and Leona, a lovely calico female. At three months old, they are full of energy. Watching them play provides much amusement to the staff and visitors.

Summer visitors often like to take something home from the island. This week there will be two opportunities to do that while benefiting the shelter. On Monday, August 11, Alex and Ani are selling their unique charm bracelets at their store in Nevin Square in Edgartown. Refreshments will be served to anyone who comes to browse their jewelry from 6 until 8 p.m. Fifteen percent of all sales go to the benefit of our animals. On Wednesday, August 13, a variety of items will be sold at a gift show held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 64 School street in Edgartown. The sponsors are earmarking five per cent of their sales for the shelter.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.

Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations. Please make checks out to The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 1829, Edgartown, MA 02539.
