Call it an Instant Regatta. A record 25 boats competed in last Thursday’s evening race, eclipsing the record of 22 set last year. The gathering was the largest single-division competition in Vineyard Haven harbor since last year’s Moffett Race, which featured more than 35 boats.

Nineteen Division A and six Division B boats competed in the evening event, representing more than 75 sailors and friends.

Bow Van Riper on the Vineyard 15 Tyche took the blue ribbon just 34 seconds over Mike Power aboard Artful Dodger, a Tartan 35. Just 15 seconds later Ed Cerullo on Undine, a Morris 36, grabbed third.

Overall, 18 different sailboat designs competed from Sonars and Solings to a 42-foot J/120 to the 28-foot yawl Tern built by Gannon & Benjamin and skippered by Woody Bowman.

At Sunday’s race a damp drizzly day and light air forced the substitution of a Course 1 — twice around the harbor buoys — for the planned Sound race last Sunday. Six Division A boats and three Division B entries made the commitment to race, and most took two hours or more to move around the course.

Phil Hale on Tango took the A Division by a comfortable margin, showing he is continuing to find his rhythm in his new J/100. He was followed by Mo Flam in second aboard Penelope, an Alerion 28, and Commodore Jerry Goodale on Stormalong, a Pearson 31, in third.

Dan Culkin and Magic Time, a double-ended Vineyard Vixen, returned to the winner’s circle in the B Division after a few weeks away and appears ready to make a run for the second-half division title. David Lott aboard Avanti, a Cape Dory 270, was second.
