Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Swing opens this weekend at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse on the Patricia Neal Stage. The musical play was written by Trey Ellis and Ricardo Khan and directed by Mr. Khan. If you like jazz with your baseball, this show is for you.

The performance takes theatregoers back to 1947 when Jackie Robinson first broke the color barrier in American baseball and walked away with Rookie of the Year honors. Satchel Paige, however, is now 41 and although some say the best pitcher in baseball at the time, he had to spend his career in the Negro Leagues. In 1947 he was at the end of his career. But now Satchel Paige gets to show his stuff with an off-season all-star game against Bob Feller’s all stars.

The Gazette co-sponsors a special dinner and show to support the playhouse on Friday, August 15, pairing a traditional Kansas City barbecue rib dinner courtesy of ArtCliff Diner with the show.

Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Swing runs through Sept. 6. Visit vineyardplayhouse.org for a schedule of performances, which begin at 7:30 p.m.
