Oak Bluffs police arrested an Edgartown man Friday on several charges, including strangulation and assault with a dangerous weapon, after he allegedly attacked a woman he knows.

According to a statement from police, Oak Bluffs officers were sent to a Pennsylvania avenue home at about 3 a.m. Friday because of reports of a fight in progress. According to witnesses, Mr. Barbosa allegedly assaulted the woman who had an active abuse prevention order against him.

Police said a witness allegedly observed him pushing the woman in the chest and choking her. Another man allegedly was able to separate Mr. Barbosa from the woman, police said, at which point he allegedly armed himself with a knife.

He was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (a knife), strangulation, armed burglary, domestic assault and battery and violation of an abuse prevention order. Police said he is being held at the Dukes County Jail.
