On Sunday, August 24, Union Chapel will host guest preacher Dr. Charles G. Adams of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit, Mich. This will be Dr. Adams’ farewell sermon at the chapel after eight summers.

Dr. Adams has been pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church since 1969. Before that he served as pastor of the historic Concord Baptist Church in Boston. He has lectured on homiletics and Black Church Studies at Boston University, Andover Newton School of Theology, Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City and Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colo.

He has been awarded 12 honorary doctorates.

In April 1989, Dr. Adams was invited to speak before the United Nations on South African apartheid, and in 1990, he was a lecturer for the World Congress of the Baptist World Alliance in Seoul, Korea. He often publishes in scholarly journals and daily and weekly newspapers. Dr. Adams’ book Power in the Pulpit describes how he prepares, writes and delivers his sermons.

Services begin at 10 a.m. with an organ prelude at 9:40 a.m. The chapel is located at the end of Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs, at the intersection of Narragansett and Kennebec avenues.
