Blankets and beach chairs dotted Ocean Park by early afternoon on Friday as fireworks revelers marked their spots for the annual display.

Coolers unpacked, sweatshirts donned, the crowd listened to old favorites, marches and standards played by the Vineyard Haven Band while they waited for the big show.

As the sun set on the busiest night of the summer, the presidential motorcade made its way through town as visitors stopped and waved at the familiar procession of black SUVs. President Obama and family watched the fireworks show from Valerie Jarrett’s Oak Bluffs home.

At 9:15 p.m., the bright globes that light up the park went dark and the band silent as the first boom of the night kicked off the display, which lasted 25 minutes.

The annual show is hosted by the Oak Bluffs Fireman’s Civic Association. Beginning last year, the television network BET Centric has helped fund the event.
