The beauty about Sunday softball at Chilmark’s Flanders Field is that everyone has fun. It’s a place where year-round Islanders and summer visitors can play ball and get to know each other.

There are no umpires; close plays are settled by quiet consensus. You throw your glove in a pile and choose up sides. No one is left out. “This is my church on Sundays,” says Oak Bluffs entrepreneur Caleb Caldwell. “There is no final game,” chants a wise philosopher. Posters are already designed for the 2015 summer season of this special softball league.
