The first wind festival took place in 1967. It ran for 20 years and mostly featured flying kites. There were numerous prizes including best kite, highest kite and longest flying kite. There was also a prize one year for the most damaged kite. Two young boys still remember winning what they considered the best prize of the festival for the leftover shards of their kite turned in at the end of the day. The prize was five free ice cream sundaes.

The festival was revived in 2011 and now features windy events of all kinds, but the kites still reign supreme. No more prizes for most damaged kite, but there are kudos for most unusual and smallest kite.

The events begin at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday, Sept. 6, and go on until dusk. The day begins with free kite making for children and then the flying contests begin at noon, separated by age group. There are also frisbee contests and model sailboat racing. Make a day of it and let the wind blow you back to your youth.

Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 7.
