If you are headed out today to fish the derby, use extra caution: the National Weather Service has issued high surf and small craft advisories until 6 p.m. Monday.

A high surf warning is in effect on ocean exposed beaches of the south coast of Massachusetts, including the Cape and Islands. Surf height is expected to be five to 10 feet.

Those looking at the water from the shore are advised to stay in safe areas away from the threat of large waves.

There is a small craft advisory in effect within 25 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard. The small craft advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, and building seas are expected to continue through the day Monday. The National Weather Service advised inexperienced mariners, especially those operating small vessels, to avoid navigating in these conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, there is also a threat of rip currents, a strong current of water flowing from the beach to the surf zone. Those caught in a rip current are advised to swim parallel to the beach until out of the current, and not to attempt to swim to shore across the current.
