October is off to a wet start — so much so that the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service, a flood watch is in effect from 5 p.m. through Thursday morning for a large portion of southeastern Massachusetts, including Martha’s Vineyard. The weather service said there could be heavy rainstorms and embedded thunderstorms and there is the possibility of a relatively fast accumulation of three to six inches of rainfall. Rainfall rates of one to two inches an hour are possible.

The National Weather Service cooperative station in Edgartown recorded 1.68 inches of rain in all of September.
