The town of Oak Bluffs has awarded a contract for the construction of a new fire and emergency services station.

J.K. Scanlan, a construction firm based in East Falmouth, submitted the winning bid for $6,453,000.

The company was chosen among four qualified bids because of a proposal that emphasized efficiency, high-quality building materials and longer warranties, owner’s project manager Joe Sullivan said at a Tuesday meeting of the board of selectmen.

“Ultimately we want the best quality for the longer warranty, that only benefits the town overall,” he said.

The fire station will have a metal-frame and will measure 19,970 square feet, according to plans. The new station is to be built at the site of the existing station.

An evaluation committee reviewed the proposals, interviewed two finalists, and recommended the contract to the selectmen, who voted to award the bid on Tuesday at their regular meeting.

Bids ranged from $6.2 to $7.9 million.

A vote at spring town meeting set $8.3 million aside for the overall project, and the J.K. Scanlan proposal is within that budget, town officials said.

J.K. Scanlan has committed to a 10-month time frame for construction, two months shorter than the requirement set by the town’s request for proposals.

Mr. Sullivan attributed their lean schedule to prior experience with similar projects.

“If they have done a similar building, they have the experience and knowledge of how to do it more efficiently and better,” Mr. Sullivan said.

The firm built the public safety building on Nantucket and a fire rescue department in Falmouth, according to its website.

Construction is slated to begin within 30 days.
