This week, the sign outside the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury shows a man dancing with a chicken. Or perhaps he is asking the chicken to dance and the chicken is still debating the question. Fowl can be so fickle after all, but rightfully so as they are often asked to dinner and not the dance floor.

But this Saturday at the Barn Raisers’ Ball, which the sign is advertising, everyone and everything will be hitting the dance floor in celebration of the anniversary of the raising of the new Agricultural Hall 20 years ago. In May of 1994, nearly 40 Islanders traveled to New Hampshire to take down a 1905 dairy barn and bring it back to the Island. Then, in November of that year, hundreds of Islanders helped raise the barn in its current location on Panhandle Road.

The annual party is not just a nod to the past, though. It is also a celebration of the present — the community, the season, food, friendship and, of course, dancing — perhaps even with a chicken.

The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free. Just bring a dessert to share. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will provide the music, as they have ever since 1994.
