The West Tisbury selectmen have appointed a new building inspector.

Joseph Tierney Jr., who is currently a local inspector for the town, is expected to succeed Ernie Mendenhall, pending Mr. Tierney’s notification of state certification. Mr. Tierney’s new full-time position will also include facilities management duties, selectmen said at their meeting Wednesday.

Mr. Mendenhall will assume the role of assistant building inspector.

“Congratulations to both of you,” selectman Richard Knabel said.

In other business, part of a property near Lambert’s Cove Beach where West Tisbury residents had permission to park has been sold. “We should ask the new owners if they are willing to create some sort of agreement with the town,” chairman Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter 3rd suggested. “This is a longstanding practice and the spaces there are precious.”

Town administrator Jennifer Rand said she would contact the parks and recreation committee to write a joint letter explaining the long history of the town’s access to the property.

Also on Wednesday, selectmen said two people, Erik Hammarlund and Ernie Thomas, applied to be the town’s appointeed representative to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. The former representative, Brian Smith, submitted his resignation in September. Selectmen said they will invite Mr. Hammarlund, who currently serves on the commission as an elected member, and Mr. Thomas to the Nov. 12 meeting to learn more about them before moving forward with an appointment.

Finally, selectmen agreed to to give Chuck Wiley the Leland cyprus trees he planted years ago on Old Stage Road before the town took it over by eminent domain. Ms. Rand said she would work out a timeframe for him to remove and take back his trees.

“Eventually the town will have to cut them back as they grow . . . so we are saving ourselves too,” Mr. Manter said.
