I want to express my personal admiration for Ed Brooke. Ed hired me as one of his assistant attorneys general soon out of law school and installed in me a strong and everlasting respect for the law and public service. On a very basic level he was the light that brightened everything and everyone he touched. Every morning while in the Attorney General’s office, his staff waited in anticipation of his entering and stopping to individually give us kind words of encouragement. He made us feel that we were all very important to the success of the commonwealth and no one could do the job better than we could. His first priority was always doing what he believed was right regardless of political consequences. My only regret was that he was not able to exercise his skills in the United States Senate longer than the two terms he served.
