A Vineyard Haven accountant pleaded guilty Wednesday to filing false tax returns in which he underreported more than $800,000 in income over three years, according to a statement by the U.S. District Attorney.

Roger A. Armstrong, 61, pleaded guilty to three counts of filing false tax returns, said spokesman Christina DiIorio-Sterling in a statement. Mr. Armstrong, a certified public accountant and tax preparer, did not report about $790,000 in gross receipts and about $47,000 in revenue for tax years 2009 through 2011, Ms. DiIorio-Sterling said, and as a result he did not pay $200,000 in taxes.

The statement said Mr. Armstrong lived and worked on Martha’s Vineyard and owned rental property in Massachusetts and Florida.

U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani scheduled Mr. Armstrong’s sentencing for April 28. According to Ms. DiIorio-Sterling, statute provides a sentence of no more than three years of prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gain or loss, whichever is greater for each count, but actual sentences are typically less than the maximum penalties.
