Seventh grader Spencer Pogue won the Edgartown School’s National Geographic Society 2015 geography bee on Tuesday, Feb. 3. Spencer is a world traveler, A student and participant in both sports and music, and he used his interest in world geography to answer a variety of questions and end up as school champion.

Moderator and school librarian Nancy Cole led students through the rules and rounds of questions in front of the two judges, Michael Lynch and Ellie Parece, and a gym full of students, staff and parents. Sixth grade social studies teacher Pati Nelson was this year’s bee coordinator, and the competition featured winners from fourth to eighth grade classes.

Spencer competed in the final round against eighth grader Hollis Kelly; they both answered the first two questions correctly, and Spencer claimed victory with the final question. Other classroom winners who competed in the final round Tuesday were eighth grader Hunter Cleary, seventh grader Catherine Cherry, sixth graders Ethan Creato and Brant Maynard, fifth graders Sara Creato and Brendan Donnelly, and fourth graders Julia Murray and Caroline Kelleher.

The next step for Spencer is a written test to determine eligibility for state level competition tht will name the top 100 geography bee students in the state. If he qualifies, Spencer will be invited to Washington, D.C. for finals scheduled in May.
