The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, the Island's summer collegiate baseball team, will be opening a retail store and ticket office in Vineyard Haven.

An announcement posted online in January said the Sharks will lease the former Martha’s Vineyard Bikes building across the street from the Steamship Authority Vineyard Haven terminal. The building will be renovated this winter and plans are for the store to be open from mid-May through Columbus Day weekend.

The store will sell Sharks apparel and merchandise and tickets to games, and there will also be appearances by Sharks players and Sharky the mascot, the announcement said.

In a statement, Sharks director of business operations Nelson Giannakopoulos said the store will be an important source of revenue for the team.

“The store will be a prominent component of our business plan,” he said.

The Sharks compete in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, a wooden-bat league for college baseball players from around the country. The players are hosted by local families.

The team’s first season was in 2011. The team had a leadership shakeup at the end of the 2014 season with team officials saying revenue had suffered considerably.
