The Steamship Authority’s Woods Hole terminal reconstruction project will be on the table for public discussion at a special meeting Tuesday on the Vineyard.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the regional high school Performing Arts Center.

The boat line has posted a meeting information packet on its website, and encourages people to submit questions ahead of time so they can be answered at the meeting. Questions can be submitted to general manager Wayne Lamson at wlamson@steamshipauthority.com.

SSA senior managers, including Mr. Lamson, will be on hand at the meeting to explain the details and rationale behind the $60 million-plus plan to overhaul the aging Woods Hole terminal. The terminal is the SSA’s only mainland port for service to Martha’s Vineyard and the oldest ferry terminal facility, dating to the 1950s. Operating slips were last rebuilt in the late 1970s.

A design concept for overhauling and rebuilding the terminal was approved by boat line governors in June 2014. Construction is planned to begin in the fall of 2016.

The plan came under some criticism on the Island following an online petition over fare hikes that went into effect on the Vineyard route in early January. Petitioners asked the boat line to roll back the fare hikes in light of falling oil prices and the positive impact that would have on fuel costs. The fare hikes stayed in place, but general criticism followed about SSA spending, especially on the Woods Hole project.

Vineyard boat line governor Marc Hanover agreed to call the special meeting on the Vineyard to allow more public discussion on the matter. Dukes county commission chairman Leon Brathwaite will serve as moderator.
