The Swann Auction Galleries in New York city will offer an oil painting by Loïs Mailou Jones (1905-1998) during its April 2 auction, Ascension: A Century of African-American Art. The Impressionist canvas is one of the largest landscapes by Loïs Mailou Jones that the gallery has located of a Martha’s Vineyard subject. The painting is of a beach scene at Lobsterville.

In 1941, Ms. Jones captured a Gay Head beach scene on canvas. That work is housed in the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and received the Robert Woods Bliss Award for Landscape from the The Society of Washington Artists at the Corcoran Gallery.
