The Martha’s Vineyard Airport will be closed for about three hours Sunday as Island emergency responders join in an exercise of the airport’s emergency response plan.

The airport warns that passengers and other airport users may not be able to access the airport during brief periods on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Island police, fire, emergency medical services, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, and other service departments will join the airport for the drill, which will take place near the airport terminal building and the airport business park.

The airport emergency response exercise is required by the Federal Aviation Administration; the drills are conducted once every three years.

The airport warns that smoke might be generated as part of the exercise, and there might also be an increase in emergency vehicle traffic. For more information, contact airport operations at 508-693-7022.
