The death of Peggy Freydberg particularly saddened Lucille and me. We first knew her as Peggy Sloan when we were neighbors in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. Soon after she was widowed and was remarried to another neighbor, Nick Freydberg, they decamped to Martha’s Vineyard and we soon followed, enticed by being both with them and with other neighbors Rose and Larry Treat.

Peggy became our literary muse. Her gentleness and gentility were legendary and she was extremely beautiful. This last fact was disturbing to her and she professed to resent her beauty since when people met her all they would consider was her face and not her mind. While she was certainly a liberal, she was rarely outspoken in her views. When I told her (some 50 years ago) that I had marched at Selma with Dr. King, she simply remarked that “he is a good man” and moved on. She was devoted to Nick and was devastated by his death. We are similarly upset by the loss of this great Chilmark poetess.
