West Tisbury fire personnel quelled a small brush fire in West Tisbury early Monday afternoon that stemmed from a permitted fire that got out of control.

Fire chief Manuel Estrella 3rd told the Gazette that a fire started by someone with a burn permit got out of control on Middle Point Road, which is near Long Point Wildlife Refuge on the eastern side of Tisbury Great Pond.

Chief Estrella said a bit of brush caught fire. “We knocked it down right away,” he said. West Tisbury fire responded to the scene and Chilmark and Aquinnah fire trucks were put on standby, he said.

“Everything worked out fine,” the chief said.
