Well, spring weather arrived last weekend. Most everyone in town was out either cleaning up or gardening. The flowers that were under three feet of snow a month ago made a hardy comeback. Crocus, daffodils and snowdrops are nearly in bloom. In fact, the south side of the Blue Barque sports a significant amount of them nearly in bloom as Jen Wool’s hard planting work has paid off. Friday is the beginning of a long holiday weekend in the commonwealth and Maine as Monday is Patriots’ Day and the running of the 119th Boston Marathon. Trout fishing in the Mill Pond continues to increase and should really pick up next week. The library will be closed on Sunday for spring cleaning and Monday all town buildings will be closed to observe the state holiday. Wednesday is the 45th annual Earth Day nationwide and Colleen Morris reports that this is national frog month for all of you who did not know that important fact. With hopes of warmer weather expect a large influx of people all week long.

Sig Van Raan reports that he and his wife Susan Dickler spent March on the island of St. John in the Caribbean, joined at different times by all their kids and significant others. Susan, as vice chair of the MS Foundation, is putting together the annual MS Gala in New York. Sig’s son, Jackson, has moved to Burlington, Vt. after a winter of travels through the south and southwest as well as visiting them in St. John. They are expecting a full house this summer as all their kids are making plans to come visit — with, of course, assorted boyfriends and spouses plus a granddaughter.

Lynn Christoffers of Edgartown Road returned to her home last week after a business trip to New York city and New Jersey. Several of her photographs are on exhibit and she was on hand for the opening.

Anna Alley of State Road went up to East Taunton to visit the grandchildren, Robbie and Henry, and their parents. She took them to the zoo in Providence and other activities. She came home on Tuesday.

Amy Hoff over at the library reports that they will have a busy week ahead. Saturday at 1 p.m. there will be a performance by Vineyard Belly Dance and Revue. From 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the same day the library will be hosting its Lego club for all ages. On Tuesday poet laureate Arnie Reisman will give a reading at 4:30 p.m. followed by an open mike. Since this is vacation week for Island students the library will be screening family films Tuesday through Friday at 2 p.m.; popcorn will be served. Ms. Hoff also reports that the Friends of the Library are no longer taking book donations at the shed. They will accept books starting July 1 at the school, and the book sale will be July 31 through August 2.
