The Vineyard Conservation Society, dedicated to protecting remaining special places and critical natural habitats on the Island from unfettered development, turns 50 years old this year. The organization’s mission has been adapted through the years to include protecting family farms, promoting sustainable agriculture, and advocating for recycling, energy conservation and water quality while keeping a focus on land protection.

VCS will reflect on the milestone at its annual meeting next week by looking ahead to the next half century. South Mountain Company founder John Abrams and director of engineering Marc Rosenbaum will lead a discussion about sustainability and challenges facing the Island, including climate change, declining fish stocks, an aging population and a seasonal economy. The talk will also look at VCS’s role as an environmental organization.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. Admission is free for VCS members and $10 per person for non-members.
