The Fourth of July was truly glorious at the animal shelter. So many old and new friends joined our contingent to follow our float. Special thanks to Gina and Kaya who helped to organize the group. Rebecca Mayhew marched with one of her golden retriever puppies. Is there another breed more adorable? Bella the bulldog greeting the crowd from the animal shelter truck. Patriotic spirit was shown by both humans and animals to celebrate our nation’s birthday.

Swifty, a polydactyl female. — Alison L. Mead

As reported last week, we have two little black kittens, Laverne and Shirley, who are responding nicely to our volunteers. We assume they were born feral but will be sweet and friendly when they are given a lot of attention. They now play with visitors and each other. The orange and white female that was thrown from a car window last week is a winner. Her paws are remarkable; they look as if she is wearing mittens. I counted seven toes on one front paw!

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.
