Chilmark seems to be still in summer mode. A leaf here and there is showing signs of red and yellow but the temperatures are still warm. A few of us are eager to show off our fall fashions but need to be in our warm weather gear still. The coming holiday weekend will be a busy one by all indications but it will signal the end of such festivities for this year. The businesses in town are all set to close this weekend so best to call ahead for current hours.

Good news on Facebook this morning . . . Judy Mayhew is home and resting comfortably after back surgery at a Boston hospital last week. Cheers to you Judy, we hope to see you out and about soon.

There are a number of fall adventures planned for the weekend. There will be cider by the gleaners, cute goats to name and more farm fun. Admission is free!

The Chilmark Community Church invites us to a musical meditation at Vesper Time at the church from 5 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11. Lia Kahler will play piano music to inspire meditation. There will be no spoken word, just the music for the half hour. All are welcome. The church invites us to the weekly pizza night on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at the church meeting room. And, as always, all are welcome.

Bonnie George reminds us that the Women’s Symposium will convene at the Chilmark Community Center on Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. for the 36th time. This time the subject is Never Say Never and all women are welcome to attend. There is no charge but donations are welcome to cover costs.

Virginia Jones is the manager and shopkeeper of Lambert’s Cove Glass Blowing Shop. She invites the public to visit the interesting shop that offers blown glass by Alan Cottle as well as pieces of furniture crafted by him. There are many other items in the shop including an extensive collection of new, rare and vintage books, all for sale. Virginia will have the shop open this weekend from noon to 5 p.m. The hours will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday beginning Oct. 13 through mid-December when she plans to be open daily until Dec. 24. There are many reasons to stop in and check out the extensive inventory she has amassed in the tiny shop. It is next door to the Copper Works on Basin Road.
