The recent opening at Norton Point beach on Chappaquiddick appears to have closed again.

On Saturday afternoon Edgartown artist Dana Gaines photographed the barrier beach — dry and dotted with surfcasters during high tide in Katama Bay and a falling tide on the Atlantic side.

The breach had closed early this summer after an opening that began in a 2007 storm and for the next eight years wreaked havoc with tides in Katama Bay and the largely unbuilt shoreline at the eastern end of Chappaquiddick. One house had to be moved and another was severely threatened. During a storm on Sept. 30 the beach broke open again, just west of Wasque Point, severing Chappaquiddick from the main Island and causing fresh consternation among breach-watchers.

Now the two Islands are rejoined.
