With the devilish date of Halloween falling on a Saturday, the opportunities for mayhem and satisfying all matter of sweet teeth seems larger than ever.

To get a jump on the fun, on Friday night Felix Neck hosts a Halloween Eve event from 5 to 7 p.m. Visit the wildlife sanctuary for Creatures of the Night and go on a hay ride, do a self-guided walk through the moonlit trails, carve pumpkins, make animal masks and roast marshmallows. There will even by cider by the fire. Think of it as a training meal for the main event the next day. Admission is $9, $6 for Mass Audubon members. Children under three are free.

Up-Island, Aquinnah celebrates Halloween at the Tribal building Friday beginning at 6 p.m., with prizes, mazes and a kickoff to trick-or-treating.

Also on Halloween Eve is a performance by The Yard from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s Vineyard Haven Property. Yes, the haunted Marine Hospital will be the site of various dance pieces, each done in a different part of the old mansion. Surprises lurk around every corner, and you are advised to wear comfortable shoes. Performance times are 6, 6:45, and 7:30 p.m.,  and tickets are $15 and available by reservation only. Call 508-645-9662 or email jessekeller@dancetheyard.org to purchase tickets.

The Yard is also hosting a Monster Mash dance party at its Chilmark location on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door or at 508-645-9662.

Because calories and Halloween go hand in hand, perhaps a road race is in order to start the big day. Well, the Halloween Hustle is just for you — a 2.7 mile loop beginning and ending at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. The race is a benefit to fight cancer and starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. Costumes are encouraged but not required (and there will be prizes for best finishers and best costumes). The cost is $15 in advance or $20 at the event, register at relayforlife.org/halloweenhustlemarthasvineyard.

Throughout Saturday there are all manner of Halloween parties at all the Island libraries. Oak Bluffs library celebrates at 10 a.m. with an all ages party that includes playing in haunted stacks and making spooky snacks. Come in costume. West Tisbury library invites kids to drop by and make a Hallowen craft from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., a lead-up to the library's Halloween party from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Don your costume and come by the library for hayrides, refreshments, and more crafts.

Make a spooky craft and trick-or-treat at the Edgartown library from noon to 2 p.m., while Aquinnah library's Halloween Party Spook-tacular also takes place from noon to 2 p.m. The Vineyard Haven Library stays open late on Saturday for trick-or treaters, stop by from 4 to 8 p.m. for some candy and cider provided by Friends of the Library.

Edgartown Board of Trade hosts their annual Halloween fun event with lots of activites downtown from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Trick-or-treat at downtown businesses and stop by Backwater Trading Co. for their annual costume contest.

There is also a family Dance-O-Rama at the Kelley House in Edgartown from noon to 2 p.m., an all-ages dance party featuring DJ Shizz and candy, crafts, contests, and fun.

Tisbury Senior Center hosts a Halloween luncheon at noon on Saturday. Wear a costume and stop by for soup, pumpkin bread, dessert and music provided by Tristan Israel. The cost is $5.

In the evening, the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury hosts goblins, ghouls and fairy princesses with a party that includes games, prizes, treats and a haunted hayride through the nearby graveyard that literally comes alive each Halloween night. Be forewarned, there will be screaming. The fun goes from 6 to 8 p.m.

And for the main event — the trick-or-treat, smell my feet, and give me something good to eat part of the extravaganza — two towns are closing streets to cars for popular destinations.

William street in Vineyard Haven usually sees thousands each year, and residents get ready early with off-Island trips to buy candy in bulk. Street closures all along the William street area are from 4:30 to 9 p.m.

Trick-or-treaters (or their parents) who need a break are invited to stop down the street at St. Augustine's, where there will be snacks, hot dogs, soup and refreshments from 4 to 9 p.m. The Martha's Vineyard Playhouse is also a "Halloween haven" with coffee for parents and cider and candy for the younger set. To get dinner before hitting the candy circuit, the Unitarian Universalist Society hosts a Halloween potluck from 6 to 7 p.m., bring a scary dish and your own place settings.

But Oak Bluffs is not ready to cede the Halloween honors to its neighbor town. There will be a parade beginning at 1 p.m. starting at the foot of Circuit avenue. There will be a puppet show at 2 p.m. in front of the Island Images Gallery, and Vineyard avenue from Dukes County avenue to Norris avenue will be closed to cars from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to ensure safe trick-or-treating. There will also be a ghost walking tour beginning at 7 p.m. at Ocean Park.

And then, for those adult zombies still looking to prowl, there are numerous parties at the bars in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. Celebrate as a witch or warlock the last night at the Lampost and the Port Hunter until they reopen for the summer season. The Boogies appear at the Lampost and the Grateful Dread will be at the Port Hunter. The Ritz will be offering cash prizes and gift cards at their annual costume contest while Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish provide the tunes.
