In a tense game that went into overtime, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School field hockey team beat Monomoy 2-1 in the second round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association South Division 2 sectionals.

“That’s what you call a fairy tale ending,” said Coach Lisa Knight after the game. “And we’re the ones with the happily ever after.”

The first half of the game was scoreless as the teams were evenly matched on both offense and defense. Monomoy came into the game seeded fifth with a 13-4-1 record, and the Vineyard was seeded fourth with a 12-3-1 record.

Genny Kent put the Vineyard on the board with the first goal of the game.

Coach Knight said mid-fielder and team captain Lee Hayman really stepped up in this game along with goalkeeper Julia Bettencourt. She also called the Monomoy team a “class act,”

The second half began with a strong Monomoy offense, but Bettencourt blocked every shot. A corner try by Monomoy hit Sara Poggi in the mouth, but she rallied and kept playing, reinvigorating the Vineyard offense. In a game where several of the girls were hit hard with the ball, Coach Knight said she was constantly looking for the “thumbs down” sign that would mean the player needed to come off the field.

“If the thumb’s down, I’m out there,” Coach Knight said.

No one was coming off the field today, though.

Belle Dinning finally broke through the Monomoy line 15 minutes into the second half. She charged down the field, along with Genny Kent who scored the first goal, assisted by Dinning. But with 10 minutes left to play, Monomoy scored on a corner to tie the game. The tie held until time ran out. Overtime in field hockey is a sudden death proposition — first score wins.

Both teams brought everything they had to the overtime round. In the end, it was once again Belle Dinning on the breakaway, charging down the field with the ball and scoring the winning goal for the Vineyard.

“When they say we’re not going to lose, we don’t lose,” said Coach Knight of her team’s dedication.

The team now heads to semifinals to play Cohasset on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Cohasset.
