There is still a slight chill in the air, despite the sunshine each day. Windy conditions over the weekend with more leaves falling and branches or twigs everywhere. We have experienced a little frost with temperatures falling before freezing.

Saturday at the Aquinnah Public Library there will be lots of fun things going on for the kids, including festive kids’ crafts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., making turkeys out of pine cones and feathers. There will also be a Pokeman party between noon and 2 p.m. for the kids to share and trade their Pokeman cards. On Tuesday evenings from 4 to 5 p.m. the after-school program continues. It is a time to work on homework, read a book, or work on a project — all students may join in.

Thank you to John and Wiet Bacheller for entertaining the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services license plate committee on Friday evening at the Loft in Oak Bluffs. A grand evening of friendship and fellowship while delighting in the success of the Martha’s Vineyard license plate campaign. For further information, please visit mvlicenseplate.com or email info@mvlicenseplate.com. Your support will benefit not only community services but other Island non-profits that benefit children and elderly. Anyone with a vehicle registered in Massachusetts is eligible for a plate except those with commercial, vanity or motorcycle plates. Ride with Vineyard pride!

Thank you to the Chilmark School Parent/Teacher Organization for inviting Kristina Hook-Leslie and yours truly to their quarterly community luncheon which was held on Friday at the Chilmark Community Center. We enjoyed a delicious luncheon of foods that may have been offered during the first Thanksgiving, prepared by chefs Kendra Buresch Carroll, Robert Lionette, Meg Athearn, and fifth grade students. Each student in the school had a part in making the luncheon as grand as it was, from the linen napkins, to the individual place cards, to the hand-drawn menus on each table, to the welcoming ceremony by members of the K/1 class. One of the students at my table was none other than Laina Benoit of Aquinnah. We learned there were many students from Aquinnah from preschool to fifth grade. It was a joyous way to celebrate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

Kristina and I also enjoyed a visit to the Lambert’s Cove Glass Blowing Shop in Menemsha that showcases the glassblowing designs of Alan Cottle with his originally blown plates, platters, martini glasses, bowls, vases, and much more. The shop is curated by Virginia Jones, the shop manager who sells her Fresh from the Vineyard cookbook as well as old/used/rare/out of print books on Martha’s Vineyard history, maritime history, cook books from all over, kids’ books, and beautifully knit vintage sweaters. Fall and winter hours will be 11 to 5 on Fridays through Sunday. In mid-December, Virginia will have the shop open from 11 to 4 daily through Christmas.

Chilmark Chocolates is open Thursday through Sunday, 11 to 4:30, through Dec. 18. They will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but stock up before and after for the holidays.

Josh Aronie has his food truck open again this year. He is presently situated at the Home Port Restaurant but has plans on moving closer to the center of town. Stay tuned. In the meantime, you may call in your orders ahead of time at 508-560-5883.

Condolences to Curtis Langer, Molly, and Rodeo in the loss of Curtis’s father Herbert Langer in New Jersey on Nov. 4.

Zachary Smalley, son of Jay and Millicent, was home for the weekend from his new job and home in Rhode Island. After graduating from his welding program, he is now working for Electric Boat division of General Dynamics, the third generation in his family to work there.

Jason Widdiss is still open at Howwosswee Trading Post at the cliffs each day from noon to 3 p.m. He anticipates having warm beverages available during the cold days of winter.

May you have a Happy Thanksgiving as you celebrate the day with family and friends and be mindful of those who may be alone or far from their families for the day. Remember the ancestors who shared that first holiday all those centuries ago.
