An Edgartown man taken into custody this week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers is allegedly wanted for murder in Brazil, Oak Bluffs police said.

Oak Bluffs police, who assisted with the case, said Thursday that Reinaldo Braga Barbosa, 35, was arrested by ICE officers on Monday, Nov. 16 on an outstanding federal warrant for past offenses committed in the United States.

In a statement, an ICE official said that the agency's Fugitive Operations officers arrested Mr. Barbosa, a citizen of Brazil, without incident on Monday in Edgartown. "With a prior felony assault conviction, Braga Barbosa is an enforcement priority and will remain in custody pending the outcome of removal proceedings," the statement said.

ICE did not confirm whether there is a pending warrant for Mr. Barbosa in Brazil.

According to a press release from Oak Bluffs and and Lieutenant Tim Williamson, Oak Bluffs police received information last week from talking to people on the Island that Mr. Barbosa might be wanted for murder, and they contacted the ICE office in Providence to relay the information. It is understood that Mr. Barbosa is in the country illegally.

On Monday, ICE officials traveled to the Vineyard on the Oak Bluffs police and fire boat to arrest Mr. Barbosa because of offenses committed in this country, police said. Mr. Barbosa was arrested and taken into custody, they said, and then transported in the custody of ICE back to the mainland via the police and fire boat.

According to police, Mr. Barbosa has served a sentence at the Dukes County house of correction and is on probation for an assault and battery charge.
