Due to a posting error, the up-Island regional school committee has postponed a vote on the budget for the coming fiscal year until early January.

At a meting Monday night, the committee realized it had not posted a public hearing notice for the budget hearing, originally planned for Dec. 21. Public hearings must be advertised for two weeks in advance.

Committee chairman Robert Lionette said there will be no major impact if the vote takes place in January.

“We can discuss the budget at next meeting, but [the vote] can’t happen in December, it just can’t happen with the holidays, the way they fell,” he said. “I’m not concerned.

The committee been chipping away on the draft $10.4 million budget for months.

No date has been set yet for the January hearing.

The next school committee meeting is scheduled for Dec. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Chilmark School.
