Firefighters and emergency personnel braved blizzard conditions Saturday afternoon while putting out an Edgartown garage fire.
The fire at 55 The Boulevard was put out by about 1:45 p.m. Saturday, though firefighters were still dealing with small flare-ups an hour later. The nearby house was not damaged and there were no injuries to firefighters or occupants, according to police. The garage, which had a car and motorcycle inside, is a total loss, police said.
Police, emergency personnel, and other first responders responded to the scene in driving snow and high winds blowing off nearby Sengekontacket Pond. Visibility was about 100 feet and a tree fell on a nearby power line, making the situation more dangerous.
"Worst possible conditions," fire chief Peter Shemeth said. "You're dealing with the wind, you're dealing with the snow, you're dealing with the driving conditions even getting here, trees coming down. Thank God it was the garage and not the house."
