The National Weather Service has issued warnings about dangerously cold weather coming to southeastern Massachusetts, including the Vineyard, this weekend.

An arctic air mass will bring wind chills below zero and near-record cold temperatures Saturday and Sunday, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said in a press release.

The weather service predicts that the Vineyard will get slightly milder temperatures than the rest of the state, but the weekend forecast is still frigid. Temperatures during the day Saturday are supposed to be slightly sunny with a high near 25 and wind chill values slightly below zero, and Saturday night could bring wind chill values as low as -20.

The cold temperatures could combine with high winds; gusty northwest winds of 25 to 30 miles per hour are expected throughout the day Saturday, with wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour possible.

Snow was also in the forecast Friday night, with potential new accumulation of one to three inches.

MEMA said potential impacts of the weather could include frostbite and hypothermia for those without proper clothing and protection from the cold, potential vehicle failures, water main breaks or pipe bursts, and potential fires or carbon monoxide poisoning from alternative heat sources.

The Coast Guard is asking fishermen to take caution this weekend, noting that heavy freezing spray Saturday afternoon into Sunday could result in dangerous conditions for vessels in near-shore waters off the coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The wind chill temperatures could result in frostbite in as little as 10 minutes, the Coast Guard said.
