Uncle Seth’s Pond in West Tisbury has been closed to swimmers, the town selectmen confirmed.

The pond was closed by the board of health earlier in the day. Health agent Omar Johnson could not be reached, but at the weekly selectmen’s meeting Wednesday selectman Kent Healy said bacterial contamination is the likely cause.

“That pond is almost always closed . . . because of coliform bacteria, found in human waste, and the waste of geese, things like that,” he said.

Seth’s Pond is a freshwater pond located off Lambert’s Cove Road.
