In a certain home that will not be named, the tradition following Thanksgiving dinner is to unsheath a large sword and lop the head off a chocolate turkey. Immediately following this signature act, the singing of Christmas carols commences.

It is a sharp and abrupt shift of holiday seasons but it does do the job, moving from the table of thanks to the season of giving. For others, transition means putting up holiday lights a hearty round of shopping.

Thankfully, on the Vineyard there is something to please everyone as the holiday season overflows with activities each weekend. Christmas in Edgartown is still gathering speed and will be ready for action the weekend of Dec. 13, but fear not, there is plenty to do this weekend.

Tonight, Dec. 6, the museum hosts a First Friday evening with food, music and local creations from Island artists. Down the road in Oak Bluffs, Night Owl Designs and Lularoe Clothing throws a holiday pop-up shop at Driftwood Jewelry at 42 Circuit avenue.

On Saturday, the American Legion Auxiliary in Vineyard Haven is creating a Christmas bazaar from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. At the Farm Institute in Katama there is eggnog and wreath making from 10 a.m. to noon, and at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury decorate gingerbread barns from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In Aquinnah there is an artisans festival from noon to 4 p.m., Featherstone hosts a holiday gift show everyday from noon to 4 p.m., and the Oak Bluffs Library kicks it in gear with their holiday party from noon to 2 p.m.

Wind down at the end of the day at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown for the Island Community Chorus concert beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Then wake up Sunday and hit the road again because the activities continue to clatter like reindeer on the rooftops. Visit with Santa at the Tisbury fire station at 10 a.m., take some holiday hayrides down Main street Vineyard Haven from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., visit again with Santa at the West Tisbury fire station from 1 to 3 p.m. and again at the Black Dog Tavern from 4 to 5 p.m.

And each Wednesday evening enjoy a contemplative Advent service at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, beginning at 5:30 p.m. This Wednesday’s service is entitled Waiting and Hoping.

But of course this is just a sampling of the many holiday events lighting up the Island this season. For a full selection study the calendar section with a range of colorful highlighters at the ready.
