The Island lost one of our great animal lovers and champions of the shelter last Friday. Janet Norton was instrumental at the inception of the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard, and was the original author of this column. She was a great benefactor and will always be remembered with fondness and admiration. We extend our condolences to her family and friends. The tuxedo barn cat, Mac, has left to join his mates at the Vineyard Golf Club where he’ll get to spend his days earning his keep. Since we’re on the topic of barn cats, if anyone is looking for blue collar cats to keep rodents at bay please check with us as we often have outdoor cats who would be happiest in just such a situation.

We have a lovely, young cat in need of a forever home. Annie is no more than a year old, she’s black/gray tabby and white and a real lover. She even has a black spot on her nose. She enjoys being held, adores people and is sure to turn into a snuggle kitty.

Mona was an outdoor barn cat so she can be shy. Volunteers have been working with her and she enjoys petting and purrs and purrs, and she has begun seeking out attention. She’s about a year old and is gray with a little white on her chest and big golden eyes.

Where are all the rabbit aficionados? Tawny is such a sweet, friendly, funny, playful bunny that someone must want to give her a loving home. She is the juvenile, dwarf Dutch bunny, and she’s been spending her time hopping around the hallway, climbing in and out of her cage, and hanging out on a chair. She’s hoping for a home with someone who will let her out of her cage, play with her and let her stretch her legs. She’s been hand raised, and adores people. She’s been spayed so she would make a fine companion for another bunny, and she uses a litter box.

We have two black and white, Abyssinian Guinea Pigs and both have rosettes on their heads. These boys are brothers who do get along so can be caged together, but do not need to be adopted together. The larger of the two is Mr. President and his brother is Dolphin.

Our annual rabies clinic will be held this Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the West Tisbury Fire Station. All dogs must be on leash, and cats and ferrets need to be in carriers. The fee is $25 per animal and the vaccine is good for one year unless a prior rabies certificate is presented. If anyone needs dog food, we have plenty and are happy to share. Stop in during regular shelter hours. Crates too are available for free. Volunteers are also always welcome for a variety of tasks. The shelter phone number is 508-627-8662.

Shelter hours are: Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.
