Edgartown police were called to a single-car accident on the West Tisbury Road at around 7 a.m. Saturday after the driver of a Toyota Camry ran off the road and flipped his vehicle.

The northbound motorist, a Vineyard Haven resident, was on his way home from work and may have fallen asleep, Edgartown Sgt. Joel DeRoche told the Gazette.

“He left the roadside on the north side of the road, crossed the road and ended up in the woods on the south side,” Sergeant DeRoche said.

The vehicle overturned in the course of the accident, causing apparent minor injuries to the driver, who was transferred to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as a precaution.

“(He) got very lucky,” the sergeant said.
