A three car pile up on State Road Tuesday afternoon sent one passenger to the hospital and closed a stretch of road for more than a hour, according to Tisbury police Sgt. Max Sherman.

A passenger in one of the vehicles was injured and transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital after the accident, Sergeant Sherman said. No other drivers or passengers were injured in the crash.

He said the accident took place at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and involved three vehicles. Although a police report was not available, Sergeant Sherman said he believed that the collision began when a car rear-ended a vehicle traveling in the same direction, causing a chain reaction that involved the third vehicle.

The collision took place on a stretch of State Road beside The Cove Golf and Grill and Shirley’s Hardware.

Mr. Sherman said the incident involved a GMC caravan and a box truck, though he could not confirm the third vehicle involved.

Tisbury police, fire and EMS responded, as well as the Massachusetts State Police.

One vehicle was damaged in the collision and towed from the scene, Sergeant Sherman said.

The collision caused a leakage of oil and fluids on the road, which were treated with a quick drying substance, he also said. A street sweeper was also brought to the scene to aid the clean up process.

“I know it was quite involved,” Sergeant Sherman saod. “We had to close the road for awhile and there was a good amount of fluids and oil on the street.”

A stretch of road from Pine Tree Road to the Vineyard Haven Park and Ride was closed to traffic for over an hour during the accident and response. The road was reopened at 2:30 p.m., the sergeant said.

He said state police are investigating.
