On Thanksgiving day I was off-Island visiting family in America. I had arranged for a friend of mine and his caregiver to have Thanksgiving dinner delivered. Around four in the afternoon the care-giver called while I was on 495 headed back to Woods Hole. The dinner was never delivered.

I pulled over and after making a few calls and coming up empty, I called the Edgartown police to see if they could help locate the provider. Officer O’Rourke called back to let me know that they were not successful.

He then called Sergeant Bishop at home for advice and guess what? Sergeant Bishop prepared two plates and two pieces of pie from his own table and Officer O’Rourke picked them up and delivered dinner himself to the caregiver and his patient, one of Edgartown’s very first volunteer EMTs.

As it turned out, the provider actually delivered dinner but the driver left it outside at a door that is not longer in use and nobody inside was aware of it.

A good deed done by a great policemen sets an example for us all to follow, making Thanksgiving on Martha’s Vineyard a truly beautiful event and reminds is of what Thanksgiving is all about.

Thank you Mike and Willy.
