Problems with two Steamship ferries lead to delays on the Vineyard route Wednesday and Thursday. The Island Home and Nantucket ferry, two passenger ferries that service the Island, both had mechanical issues this week.

The delays and cancellations started Wednesday, when the Island Home had to undergo electrical system repairs. The Gay Head freight ferry was called in to run in its place for a time Thursday, limiting passenger capacity. The Nantucket also had an issue with its stern door, forcing vehicles to be backed onto the vessel for loading Thursday.

“While we will do everything possible to adhere to our schedule, delays in travel are likely until the issue is resolved,” the authority said in a statement Thursday morning.

Because of the limitations on Wednesday due to the breakdowns, some vehicles were not able to travel by the end of the day. They were given first priority to be loaded when space was available.

On Thursday, the authority reported the Island Home repairs were completed and it was scheduled to be back in service for its 1:15 p.m. departure from Woods Hole.
