The Chilmark select board has scheduled a special town meeting for Jan. 22 for voters to weigh in on a one-article warrant regarding the Chilmark preschool.

The meetng begins at 7 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center.

Voters will take up the question of whether to issue a request for proposals to lease 3,000 square feet of town land by the Chilmark school, aimed at enabling the nonprofit, private Chilmark preschool to construct a two-classroom building next to the school’s current playground.

The Chilmark preschool has previously been allowed to use vacant classroom space at the town elementary school, however a rise in enrollment in recent years has led to a space crunch.

At the board meeting Tuesday, the select board voted to approve the proposal for the nonprofit to build a school, and approved the warrant for town residents to vote on whether to lease out the town-owned land.

Town administrator Tim Carroll said the quick turnaround for the Jan. 22 meeting was based on deadlines for a grant application the preschool is pursuing.

Quorum for the special town meeting is set at 25 voters.
