Eighth grader Owen Porterfield was the winner of the 2015 Tisbury School Geography Bee, taking home the title on Wednesday by correctly answering the following question: “National Geographic explorer Shivani Bhalla works with warriors in the local Samburu community to protest lions south of Lake Turkana in which African country?”

Owen correctly answered Kenya. Next up for the champ is a written test that will determine eligibility for the state level competition. The National Geographic Society Bee national championship is scheduled for May 11-13 in Washington D.C.

Tisbury School social studies teachers Sean DeBettencourt and Reuben Fitzgerald conducted classroom geography competitions in December.

On Wednesday, school principal John Custer conducted the schoolwide bee. The school finalists were fifth graders Nico Arroyo and Ruairi Mullin, sixth graders Owen Steenkamp and Ashtyn Watts, seventh grader Henry Warner and eighth grader Christian King. Seventh grader Peter Burke faced off against Owen in the championship round.
