Ruth Estelle Millette Was Nurse and Avid Reader

Ruth Estelle Millette died at Windemere on July 31. She was born Nov. 1, 1915, in Chelsea, the daughter of the late Milton and Gertrude Millett.

In her early childhood, her family moved to Dover-Foxcroft, Me., where she was graduated from high school and then went on to attend Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing in Boston, from which she was graduated and where she continued to work, later becoming head nurse.

She left Peter Bent Brigham to care for her sister, Ruth Beakley, in Washington, D.C. After the death of her sister, Ruth returned to the hospital and worked for the Doctors Strock in Boston.

In the 1950s, she came to the Island to work for the Strocks, first living at Glimmerglass in West Tisbury and then in Vineyard Haven.

Ruth worked for the Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce and Shirley's Hardware until she retired in her early eighties.

Ruth was a past member of the town of Tisbury personnel board and the League of Women's Voters.

She is survived by a niece, Susan M. Boass of West Tisbury and Hopkinton, and a nephew, Jerry D. Millett of West Tisbury and Florida.

Funeral services will be private, under the direction of Dyer-Lake Funeral Home in North Attleboro.

Ruth was an avid reader, and donations may be made in her memory to the Vineyard Haven Public Library.
