William Irving Clark, 92, Served Town of Chilmark

William Irving Clark of Chilmark died at his home on August 28 at the age of 92. He was a year-round resident of Chilmark for more than 30 years.

William was born in Worcester, the youngest child of William I. and Elizabeth (Pratt) Clark. He attended the Bancroft School and Milton Academy and in 1933 was graduated from Harvard University. A year later he married Louise Sawyer; they settled in Menands, N.Y., where they raised their four children. William was employed for 37 years by Behr Manning/Norton Company in Troy, N.Y. After retiring, he and Louise moved to Martha's Vineyard where he enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. On the Island he served on the Chilmark town affairs council and the board of assessors.

He is survived by his three children, William I. Clark Jr. of Marstons Mills, Laurence S. Clark of Coring, N.Y., and Louise (Robin) Hood of Essex, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Louise, and their son, Timothy H. Clark. Mr. C, as he was known, also leaves his treasured caregivers.

A memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Martha's Vineyard Community Services, Inc., P.O. Box 369, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Oak Bluffs.
