L. Richard McKinney, 60, Was Cape Entrepreneur

L. Richard (Rick) McKinney of West Falmouth, 60, died unexpectedly, but after a long illness, on Sunday, March 23, at Falmouth Hospital. He was the husband of Sharon (Waggemann) McKinney, to whom he was married for 30 years.

Born in Newton, he was the son of the late Dr. Lee R. and Jane Quigley McKinney. He grew up in Brockton and was a graduate of Brockton High School in 196. He attended Babson Institute and received his bachelor of science degree in business from Curry College in Milton.

Mr. McKinney worked as a manufacturer's representative for Verde Shoe Co. of Abington and was national sales manager for Bostonian Shoe Co.

In 1975 he founded his own company, Cape Cod Canvas inc., which manufactured canvas bags and belts. In conjunction with this, he owned and operated retail stores known as The Canvas Shop on Nantucket, in Edgartown and in Woods Hole. He was also involved in real estate and development. He was a boating enthusiast from his youth and was involved in raising funds for the Melissa Benoit Scholarship Golf Tournament for several years.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Jane Ellen McKinney of West Falmouth; an aunt, Mary McKinney of Brighton; a niece, three nephews and many cousins.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 28, in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Quaker Road, North Falmouth. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Falmouth.
